Installing Graphmatica

1. Make sure you have about 700k of free disk space.
2. Download the program to your hard drive from your web browser.
3. Unzip the archive using pkunzip or WinZip.
4. The final step depends on which platform you are using:
   • DOS: Move the files you just unzipped to their permanent home if desired.
   • Windows: Run setup.exe (or if using WinZip, just click the Install button to do this all in one step). The setup program will automatically create Start menu/Program manager icons and associate .gr files with Graphmatica. You just need to tell it where to install the program and what group to put the icons in.

1. If you've never downloaded a program off the web before, you may need to take a quick detour and install WinZip, an excellent shareware archiving utility from Nico Mak Computing. (WinZip is not supported by nor affiliated in any way with kSoft or Graphmatica.)
   1. Visit www.winzip.com to download the appropriate version of WinZip for your operating system.
   2. Run the program (winzip31.exe or winzip95.exe) you get there. This will install WinZip on your system.
2. Now download the appropriate version of Graphmatica from this site to your hard drive by choosing one of the links below from your web browser. Remember where you put the file! (If you've already downloaded one of the files, you can skip to step 3.)
   • Graphmatica for Win32 v2.0e (for Windows 95/98/Me and NT 3.51/4/2000/XP)
   • Graphmatica for Windows v1.60e (for Windows 3.1 or OS/2 3.0)
   • Graphmatica for DOS v3.60e (for DOS only systems)
3. When your browser indicates that the file was received successfully, WinZip may start automatically. If not, start it now by double-clicking on the file you just downloaded in File Manager or Explorer.
4. The WinZip wizard should start Graphmatica's setup.exe for you. You just need to choose a folder to install into, and which Program manager or Start menu group to put the icons in.

Note: This process will work on nearly any other Shareware program that comes in a ZIP file you may find on the Internet. Congratulations, you are now an expert!

There are two easily-resolved problems I know of that you may encounter with the installer even if you have followed the above instructions to the letter. The installer may abort on startup with one of the following messages:

• FATAL ERROR B103: Can not create a temporary directory

  If this happens, please check your environment setup in the System control panel. One of the variables TEMP and/or TMP must exist and be set to an existing directory (for instance C:\TEMP). I was able to get this error on my system only by setting both of these variables to bad values.

• FATAL ERROR S302: Setup cannot find SETUP.INF.  Choose OK to terminate Setup.

  This happens because the installer relies on some code which is compiled to run on either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/NT and thus is limited to 80-character long pathnames. Try moving setup.exe into a folder with a shorter name or closer to the root folder of your hard drive and running it again.

If neither of these seems to be the problem, or the recommended steps don't fix it, you may want to get a copy of the program without the installer.

In the rare case that you decide you don't want to keep it and register after 30 days, you should uninstall Graphmatica from your hard drive.

• DOS: Simply delete the files from the archive. The readme.txt file has a list of them for your convenience.
• Windows: Run the provided Uninstall icon. There may be a few trace files left in the installation direcory; you can just delete them.

Note that if you are certain you will never want to uninstall the Windows version, you can save ~300 KB of disk space by deleting the setup subdirectory under the install directory, thus removing the uninstaller.
