View from the plane en route to Lukla

As you can see, the traditional trekking route from the end of the road in Jiri to Lukla consists of a number of steep valleys separated by ridges. People I talked to on the trail who came up from Jiri said that it's a beautiful trek and hardly anyone does it anymore given the frequency of flights into Lukla.
